The Kenya Railways Commission on Monday, February 21, distanced itself from an ongoing mass recruitment drive urging applicants to apply for training and employment opportunities at the Railway Training Institute (RTI).
It emerged that unknown individuals advertised the job opportunities and handed letters of employment from the institution to unwary Kenyans
In an image seen by Kenyans.co.ke. Kenya Railways shared and flagged one of the letters sent to a victim offering him a job as a Station Master. The fake document had the letterhead of both KRC and the RTI, and was duly signed off.
"We hereby wish to notify members of the public that the above communication doing rounds on social media to the effect that Kenya Railways is currently recruiting, is false," wrote Kenya Railways
The purported employer asked the 'successful applicant to report to the RTI campus in Nairobi on February 8 by 9.00 a.m with original and photocopies of their national identification (ID) cards and academic certificates.
Applicants were also asked to report to the institution with learning material, stationery, personal effects and specific attire. Whether or not the unsuspecting applicants were asked to pay any application fee or money to secure the opportunity still remains unclear.
The Kenya Railways incident is among the numerous job opportunities that Kenyans have fallen for. On January 9, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) flagged a fake job announcement for warden positions.
Kenyans have many a time been gullible to imposters offering employment opportunities in government institutions. This is attributed to the high unemployment rate in the country.
Swindlers have evolved over the years, coming up with ways to create replica notices from targetted organisations.
Notably, the government continues to create solutions to the unemployment crisis in the country. In a memo issued by the Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua in February 2022, the state lifted a five-year that had barred parastatals from hiring personnel, thus availing thousands of employment opportunities.
