The Government has now turned its gaze towards a contractor accused of abandoning a project despite receiving cash to cover the whole project.

The revelation emerged on Wednesday, February 23, during a tour of the Coast Region by Public Works Principal Secretary Solomon Kitungu.

He noted that the construction of the new Lamu County Headquarters was yet to be completed two years after the contract was awarded and the company received an entire pay.

The PS further cautioned the director to return to the site and complete the project which is still due for Ksh76 million. The total project was valued at Ksh127 million.

“The concerned contractor for the County Government Headquarters has been paid all his monies against the certificates he presented to public works," Kitungu stated according to Capital FM.

According to reports by the County Government of Lamu, the perimeter wall of the county has been under construction alongside other projects.

Earlier, the construction of the County offices had been in the works as well and the Principal Secretary issued a two-day ultimatum to the contractor over the project.

"We are giving him two weeks after, which we will recommend that another contractor be sought to complete the project," he added.

During the tour, the PS also sent a warning to contractors handling projects by both the National and County Governments over delays.

He singled out the Mokowe Jetty, valued at Ksh600 million, that had been under construction since February 2019.

It is set to be completed in March 2022 after delays over funding. The project, which had been slated for completion by January 2020, is expected to connect Lamu to Amu, Pate, Ndau and Kiwayu Islands.

Several projects have been initiated in the area ranging from Witu weighbridge, construction of a disaster response station as well as the governor's residence.
