Kennedy Wakahiu, a University of Nairobi student and the founder of Ahiu Customs, has taken art to another level by specializing in customizing new and used shoes to suit the needs of the consumer.

Many university students are plagued with different challenges like lacking skills and capital when trying to venture into business while studying but Wakahiu has overcome those challenges to achieve his entrepreneurial dream.

“I have a talent for drawing and a passion for different kinds of footwear. I saw  an opportunity to blend the two together and start a business. ”  he revealed.

He began customizing shoes in 2019 and has built up a reputation amongst his peers in school and at home for restoring the lost love for their used shoes.

His motivation comes from his customers who appreciate his ability to execute complex designs and have expanded his reach to other potential customers through social media.

His passion and hard work have met challenges in producing the desirable outcome for his customers.

“I guarantee my customers quality. The biggest challenge I had was procuring specific leather paints that are not easily available. I hope to expand further by using automated custom making to meet the demand.” he stated.

His customers are thrilled by the variety of designs he can execute.Their curiosity pushed him to create a YouTube tutorial channel for aspiring artists who want to learn his craft.

His school work has positively impacted his business and has presented him with new challenges. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business and commerce, it has made it easier for him to manage production costs and increase profit margins.

“The price varies based on how complex the design is. The course I am pursuing  has enabled me to budget  and reinvest into the business without debt financing the business. The main challenge the course offers  has been juggling school work and business prompting me  to limit the order I take,” he explained.

Wakahiu has adopted lessons from business magnate, Jeff Bezos, who prioritises customer centrism. According to the youthful entrepreneur, this value has contributed to the demand of his services.

“Your interpersonal skills and work ethic  when presenting  the best  to  the consumer is a low cost marketing strategy.I have gotten orders based on recommendations of my loyal clients.”he remarked.
