Cracks within the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) continue to deepen with independence party KANU Secretary General, Nick Salat, lodging another scathing attack against Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka over his hardliner stance.
In a hard-hitting statement dated Thursday, March 10, Salat accused the former Vice President in the Mwai Kibaki government of acting in a selfish manner by only seeking political coalitions that benefit him as a person.
Salat, one of KANU's longest serving officials, claimed that Kalonzo was intentionally derailing the party and their party leader Gideon Moi from joining Azimio La Umoja over his personal differences with former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.
He insisted that KANU would not be held hostage as a majority of its supporters wanted to join Azimio La Umoja and back the presidential bid of Raila.
The long-term ally of Moi stated that the former Vice President was indecisive and it would affect KANU's plans of signing a pact with other parties already in Azimio La Umoja.
"I must point out that the majority of KANU membership is increasingly becoming restless with the indecisiveness, stonewalling, and meandering tactics that one of the OKA partners has adopted. This is also on record.
"As for the ongoing OKA consultations with Azimio, we cannot consult and negotiate endlessly. Time is running out. Other serious parties and political formations have already made their stand known," read his statement in part.
Salat added that KANU will be part of the Azimio La Umoja National Delegates Conference slated for Saturday, March 12 in Nairobi even if the other OKA parties opt to stay away.
"KANU is being held back by a partner in OKA who has suddenly pulled out a love letter with a previous suitor and is busy whining and grumbling over unfulfilled promises by the ex-lover.
"We were not part of the love letter and we should not be held to ransom by the OKA partner who has refused to get over their ex,” he stated.
Salat's statement came after KANU's Executive Director, George Wainaina, released a statement earlier the same day, stating that the party was firmly in OKA after Salat openly asked Moi to dump his long-time OKA principals for Azimio La Umoja.
Wainaina stated that Salat's sentiments were personal and were not the position of the party.
In response, Salat rubbished Wainaina's statement noting that he was better placed to speak on behalf of the party.
"As the SG, I wish to reiterate that I have the legal mandate and that I am in the best position to speak for the party and its membership on this matter. I wish to state categorically and without fear of contradiction that 90 per cent of KANU’s leadership and membership have their heart, soul, and mind in Azimio,” he replied.
