Former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) David Githii has launched his presidential bid for the August 9 General Election.

Speaking to the press on Monday, March 14, the former head of the PCEA church noted that he decided to vie for the top job in order to 'change the country for the better.'

He further declared that it was high time the men of cloth take over the reins in government for the country's prosperity.

"I Reverend David Muthoya Githii accept the challenge to change this country for the better together with like-minded colleagues. I hereby present my Presidential candidature in the forthcoming August 9, 2022, General Election.

"It is now the time that men and women, with the background of serving God, take charge and show Kenyans the way God will run the country for prosperity and greatness," he stated.

Regarding his competition, Githii argued that Kenyan politicians had always played the game of musical chairs and that the innate needs of Kenyans are often not met.

"With the same politicians and the same politics, exchanging positions every electoral cycle. This is purely a game of musical chairs, changing positions with no attempt to address needs for national greatness," he added.

Githii parted ways with the church in 2014 in a controversial manner in what he claims was fallout over his views on some of the inner workings within the church.

The former reverend had resigned from his duties in 2009 but his services as a minister would later be terminated in 2014.

At the time, Githii argued that the church had failed to deal with sinful issues including devil worshipping.

His successor, David Gathanju, however, refuted his claims explaining that the leadership of the church was firm enough not to allow vices among its congregation.

“We believe in a sovereign God who is true that is Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. We denounce all forms of sins which include, but are not limited to homosexuality and lesbianism and devil worship,” stated Gathanju at the time.

Githii is making an entrance into the already crowded race of presidential contenders which include former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, businessman Jimi Wanjigi, musician Reuben Kigame among others.
