Armed thugs on Wednesday, March 16, raided a police station in Samburu County and killed one officer in the process.

Area County Commissioner Henry Wafula confirmed the incident noting that the thugs got away with four rifles and ammunition.

The officer was rushed to Maralal County Referral Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

"It occurred at Lodokojek police post about 40 South East of the station and reported through phone by the in-charge post No.220540 Sgt Benard Leleur that while at the shopping centre which is about 100 metres from the post, he had heard the sound of gunshots from the direction of the police post,” part of a police report read.

The officers who rushed to the scene found their colleagues lying on the floor with bullet wounds. The injured officer is said to have suffered minor wounds on the stomach and right hand. Police affirmed that he was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition.

The thugs are reported to have fled for safety by using a motorcycle along with rifles and rounds of ammunition.

“On checking in their steel box where the firearms are usually kept, they found out that the attackers had made away with four G3 rifles," the police report stated.

The incident adds up to the recent spate of attacks by bandits who have taken scores of lives in the past few weeks.

The attack comes as Rift Valley Commissioner Mohammed Maalim had issued a shoot to kill order in a bid to contain the threat posed by the bandits.

The Commissioner issued the orders after assessing an attack at Kapkusum village whereby the bandits had attacked a boda boda rider and torched his motorbike.

He added that the threat, if not managed, would also affect the candidates sitting national examinations in the area.
