Cop Arrested For Stealing Ksh20K Phone

A police constable was on Monday, April 4 arrested by his colleagues for allegedly trying to sell a mobile phone worth Ksh20,000 he allegedly stole while on duty.

According to a report seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the officer stationed at the Olkalou station in Nyandarua County was nabbed after he was found with the phone he snatched from a woman at a popular club at midnight.

The victim filed a police report under OB number 02/04/04/2022 claiming that a man who identified himself as an officer, took her phone near an entertainment joint.

The constable is said to have asked her to follow him to the police station but soon disappeared into the dark forcing her to report the matter to the nearest police station.

"One gentleman who identified himself as a police officer snatched her phone make Oppo A15 from her hand and asked her to follow him to the station. She followed him but when they approached the station, he disappeared," read the report in part.

While on patrol, the suspect's colleague bumped into him at a bus terminus within the town selling a phone. On noticing the brand, he immediately called the investigating officer, Erick Kinoti, who was handling the case.

The two officers arrested the cop and took him to the police station. They later asked the complainant to return to the station and identify if the recovered phone was hers.

"A quick search was conducted and the said mobile phone valued at Ksh20,000 was recovered. the complainant was later called and she positively identified the officer and her mobile phone," the police statement read in part.

The suspect was taken into custody and will be charged with theft. It was later established that the officer was under the influence when he committed the offence.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have taken up the case and launched a probe into the matter. The recovered phone has not yet  been returned to the owner as it will be used as an exhibit.
