A Kenyan born woman is seeking to make history in the Minnesota, State Senate District 38 race in November this year.

Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley, will become the first-ever black woman senator in the Parliament of Minnesota if elected in the November 8 race.

The Kenyan-American is aspiring to represent District 38 (the equivalent of a Kenyan constituency) in the Minnesota State Senate.

“If elected, I will be the first black woman in the senate in its 164-year history.

"I will be the first African-American, African immigrant and the first Kenyan-American elected into the Minnesota legislature,” Huldah told The Nation.

During the interview Huldah stated that she believes she has a great chance of winning, considering that she obtained the majority delegate votes with 54 per cent during the party convention.

During her campaigns, the aspirant promised to champion a future where there is a better quality of life that is accessible to all residents in her district.

Huldah is the daughter of two Kenyan immigrants who were almost deported in 2000 before the intervention of late Minnesota US Senator Paul Wellstone.

The senator came to the family’s aid after pleas from Progressive Baptist Church, a prominent Black church that the family attended.

She is a corporate compliance specialist by profession and in a past interview with Mshale Publication, Huldah described herself as "someone who values integrity, accountability, transparency and equity".

“I am running to motivate our people, especially those from the minority communities, including African immigrants, to run for office because we need more of us in places of power.

"I am running to bring the much-needed diversity and inclusion and the change we want to see cannot come if we stand on the sidelines,” Huldah stated.
