Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's sister Ruth Odinga scampered for safety after chaos erupted at a polling station forcing police officers to fire in the air.

Ruth, who had gone to the station to inspect the ongoing primaries on Tuesday, April 19, was leaving the venue when groups of rowdy youth clashed.

The incident took place at Urudi Primary School in Nyakach, Kisumu County.

Reports indicated that the chaos was caused by rumors of one of the groups sneaking an extra electronic voting gadget into the venue.

One person is said to have sustained injuries during the incident.

In general, there were hitches when the exercise kicked off in the lakeside county with some of the party members who turned up to vote claiming that they found their names missing from the register.

The ugly scenes come two days after protests rocked Migori, Siaya and Homa Bay counties after some of the poll losers disputed the outcome of the results.

The disgruntled parties wanted the party's Dispute Resolution Tribunal to cancel the results.

Ruth Odinga is among Kisumu County's aspirants in the woman representative position after she launched her bid at the beginning of March 2022.

During her declaration, she noted that she had the constitutional right to vie for the position of her choice with her relationship with the former Prime Minister notwithstanding.

“I am ready and will face my opponents at the ballot. I don’t fear them. But no one should try to gag me,’’ she stated at the time.

Prior to announcing her Woman Representative bid, Ruth served as Kisumu County Deputy Governor.

ODM's Elections Board is yet to issue a statement on the chaos, with nominations also in Kajiado and Narok on Wednesday, April 20.

A showdown is also expected on Thursday when the Orange party conducts its primaries in Nairobi County.
