Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has been arrested.
The Senator, who took to his social media platforms, alleged that he was picked up on Thursday morning, April 21, and taken to Nairobi for questioning. The reason for the arrest is yet to be established.
Efforts by Kenyans.co.ke to reach Cherargei for further details were futile as calls went unanswered.
The senator has been on the spot in the recent past over allegations of remarks bordering hate speech. This has led to the senator appearing in court over the claims after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ordered the Senator's prosecution.
Cherargei engaged in a heated exchange with a magistrate over what he claimed as unfairness in the court system.
The politician accused Magistrate Michemi Wendy of being biased against him in the case, which led to an altercation that lasted over three hours.
Efforts by the judge to urge the senator to stand down bore no fruits as Cherargei alleged that Magistrate Wendy had a vendetta against him.
“Why am I being intimidated? I thought courts are safe? They are even calling a police inspector! These are hostilities!” he lamented.
Following the outburst in court, the magistrate ordered the DCI to probe the Senator over contempt of court.
Cherargei's arrest comes after Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, Benson Mutura, was also arrested over allegations of theft on Wednesday, Nairobi 20.
The Speaker noted that he was picked up by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers and taken to their headquarters for questioning.
Mutura however, alleged that the incident was a political witchhunt because of his affiliation with Deputy President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
