Following Deputy President William Ruto's footsteps, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua believes that the second lady's office will be a prayerful one, thanks to his wife Dorcas Wanjiru.
In an interview hours after his nomination as the Kenya Kwanza running mate on Sunday, May 15, the politician whose rise is nothing short of meteoric, hinted that Ruto's government would be all-prayerful.
“Kenya will be a prayerful nation," declared Gachagua in the interview.
His assertion succeeded an emotional prayer at his nomination rally delivered by his wife Dorcas just before the announcement was made.
Whereas Rachel Ruto is well known for her summons, and calls for prayers, Wanjiru has always taken a back seat as she supports her husband who is now on the national stage.
According to insiders, however, Dorcas is known as a very religious individual and runs her own Church in Mathira Constituency which she uses to spread the word of God.
Since the alliance between Gachagua and Ruto became apparent in 2018, Dorcas came to the limelight during the DP's rally in the Mt Kenya region.
In a sermon at the beginning of May, the preacher, who ministered in a Church service attended by DP Ruto, did not shy away from heaping praises on her husband noting that Gachagua often assists with house chores when the need arises.
She also maintained that she, alongside a team of clergy from the Mt Kenya region, would actively participate in the upcoming elections and had already taken sides.
"The clergy represented here is a pool of untouched potential. These are men of substance and influence. In our engagement, we have agreed that we will no longer act safe, never be fence-sitters or say we are neutral.
"In the 2022 elections, the Church is on the ballot. This election is about light and darkness and we are the light of the world. These numbers are not just numbers, they speak to us. (Ruto), you will become the President. Presidency of grace," she declared attracting applause from the congregation, largely consisting of politicians.
She is also considered the matriarch of her household and the force behind the success of the Mathira lawmaker, with whom they are blessed with two children, Kevin and Keith, who are already grown up.
Dorcas is also said to spearhead the success of some of her family's businesses and is listed among the directors of Wamunyoro Investments Limited, a consolidated company owned by the family.
In 2021, she received a Honorary Doctorate from Breakthrough International Bible University in recognition of her commitment in serving widows under the Dorcas Rigathi Mercy Ministries.
