A prime suspect alleged to be the mastermind of the Mirema broad daylight shooting of Samuel Mugo Mugota has surrendered to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Dennis Gachoki Karani, has denied plotting the murder of Mugota, who was accused of running a drug spiking cartel through which over 50 women were used to swindle unsuspecting revellers in entertainment joints.

Karani, in video seen by Kenyans.co.ke refuted being a fugitive. He spoke to the press outside DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road where he was expected to record a statement.

"I was in Nakuru when I learnt that the DCI labelled me as the most dangerous and armed criminal," the suspect who was accompanied by his lawyer noted.

"Someone recognized me and told me that police had launched a manhunt and were tracking me down. Since then my life turned topsy turvy and I have lacked peace," he added.

Karani, nonetheless, acknowledged that he was an acquaintance of the deceased, having met only twice.

"I knew him but I had never had his contact. I got to know him in 2018 during a wedding ceremony in Meru. A friend of mine introduced me to Mugota. After the wedding, we used the same vehicle back to Nairobi.

"We never exchanged the contacts. At the time of his murder, I was in Nakuru when I heard that he has been killed. I learnt about his death through the media," the suspect explained.

The DCI, in their earlier statement, claimed that the two reportedly differed on the proceeds of the mchele spiking syndicate.

“This among other beefs are suspected to have led to a bitter fallout leading to Monday’s, May 16, daylight murder of Samuel Mugoh Muvota, who has left behind seven grieving widows and countless children,” DCI wrote.

Gachoki, however, denied the allegations, arguing that he was a renowned businessman trading in cereals and had been framed for the murder.

DCI detectives are expected to grill the suspect, who they had earlier alleged was in contact with rogue officers who aided him to evade arrest.
