Mombasa gubernatorial hopeful under the Wiper Party ticket, Mike Mbuvi Sonko, met with fellow contestants, Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and United Democratic Alliance's (UDA), Hassan Omar Hassan.

In pictures shared on his social media platforms, Sonko confirmed that he was part of a meeting organized by the Mombasa clergy on Saturday morning, May 28.

The former Nairobi governor stated that the three shared the stage at a prayer meeting called by the religious leaders in Mombasa, ahead of the gubernatorial contest slated for August.

Sonko pointed out that it is crucial for politicians eyeing seats in the county to pledge peace and keep off divisive politics during campaigns in the cosmopolitan county.

"I was privileged to attend a Church breakfast meeting at Bahari Beach hotel. We are one and we are all human. As I have always put it, colour, tribe, religion, family background and societal disbeliefs should not divide us, leaders," Sonko stated.

"We should all fear God and always stick to what we say. We should always respect our people. We should always be ready to help and stand with them at all times. We must always preach peace and love as we campaign," he added.

His comments come in the background of a call for peace in the coastal region after chaos broke out at an Azimio rally that Sonko attended on May 14, 2022.

The chaos erupted after rowdy youths attacked Sonko's convoy.

Sonko was attacked while making his way to the venue, just hours after announcing that he would join the outgoing Mombasa governor, Hassan Ali Joho, and Mvita Member of Parliament, Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, at the event.

Police were forced to fire in the air to disperse the rowdy youth who expressed their agitation at Mike Sonko's decision to join the Mombasa gubernatorial race.

The event MC, pleaded with the group to cease the confrontations and allow the rally to continue peacefully.

Sonko opted to leave the rally after the disastrous reception. He had stated that he would be present at the Azimio rally since his Wiper party is backing the candidature of Raila Odinga.
