Five people have been buried alive in Githunguri, Kiambu county after a toilet foundation collapsed on Friday, June 3.

The five were reported to have been constructing the toilet at PCEA Mukua Secondary School.

Emergency service providers are currently at the accident scene with attempts to rescue the victims underway.

Police arrived at the site to lead the rescue operations and commence investigations into the accident.

The law enforcers and the National Construction Authority (NCA) are expected to issue a preliminary report after visiting the site.

Kiambu county has been grappling with faulty constructions over the past years.

The Githunguri tragedy comes less than a month after an unknown number of people were trapped inside the rubble of a building that collapsed in Ruiru.

A majority of those trapped and injured were tenants living on one end of the crumbled building on May 18.

In March 2022, two months earlier, more than 50 students from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) were evacuated from a five-storey residential apartment that had started sinking in Juja.

The building near the university's 'Gate C' area started caving forcing students to sound an alarm.

Government experts attributed the tragedies to the influx of developers rushing to secure the market in the area, which is boosted by the Thika Superhighway, and the Northern and the Eastern bypasses.

Prices of land and houses have since skyrocketed.

Areas that have seen an increase in new projects include Kamakis, Utawala, Ruai, Kamulu, Joska, Malaa, and Tala.
