A businessman based in Thika town has made headlines after losing Ksh5.7 million while in a public toilet.

According to a police statement dated Wednesday, June 22, the businessman had made over three transactions from different banks in various locations on that fateful day.

After withdrawing a total of Ksh5.7 million, he stashed the money in his car below the front passenger seat and then drove towards Thika Town.

But on his journey to an unclear destination, the businessman felt pressed and decided to park his car near a public toilet in Thika to relieve himself.

The short call which usually lasts one to two minutes turned out to be calamitous as he found his car's rear window broken. He found the money missing.

"He withdrew the money and kept it below the front passenger seat of his motor vehicle and drove to public toilets near KPLC Thika deport opposite St Patrick Catholic Church where he parked and went to the toilets to relieve himself.

Upon coming back, he realised that the right rear window has been broken and cash totalling Ksh5,713,000 stolen," the police statement read in part.

The preliminary report by the cops who sealed the scene of the crime in Thika did not disclose why the businessman was driving around with millions stashed in his car.

However, the Directorate Criminal Investigation (DCI) officers drawn from Thika have opened an investigation surrounding the mysterious disappearance of the money at a public toilet.

Usually, most public toilets have attendants sitting just before their entrance who monitor the surroundings after charging people to use them.

The report did not indicate if the toilet attendants witnessed the theft which has been described as smooth and precise.

Cases of businessmen losing their money after withdrawing from financial institutions have been skyrocketing in the country. Most of those cases have been linked to inside jobs and even set-ups.

To combat the vice, most financial institutions have increased surveillance including installing CCTV cameras and even employing security officers to man their premises.
