Tiaty Member of Parliament, William Kamket, has vowed to sue the government seeking Ksh100 million compensation for his arrest in 2021.

The MP, on Monday, June 27, stated that he will file a suit at the High Court to compel the government to pay for what he claims was malicious arrest and prosecution.

Kamket's lawyer Kipkoech Ngetich argued that the MP was harassed, embarrassed and subjected to public ridicule when he was linked to clashes in Ol Moran, Laikipia County.

“We are going to file a case seeking Ksh100 million in damages and compensation for the malicious prosecution by the state to serve as a lesson for their actions.”

“My client was acquitted under section 210 of the criminal procedure code. This means that the state never had a case against him,” Ngetich stated.

The attorney accused the police of using the judicial system to punish the MP through falsified charges that could not be substantiated.

He added that the ruling signified his client's innocence and cleared his name as the police were using him as a scapegoat while grappling with quelling violence in the area.

Kamket was arrested by DCI detectives on September 8, 2021. At the time, eight people, including three police officers, had been killed by bandits at Kerio Valley in a span of six days.

Then Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, George Natembeya, accused politicians of instigating the violence which displaced hundreds of people from their homes.

"When they go to Nairobi, they pretend to be good people but on the ground, they are funding the violence. A time has come for them to stop shading those crocodile tears," he stated.

DCI is also on the spot over the arrest since the prosecution did not prefer any charges against the MP. The case was adjourned five times in nine months as the court gave prosecutors ample time to produce witnesses.

The lead prosecutor hence applied to withdraw the case noting that key witnesses could not be traced.
