Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang'i, has allayed fears over the hand over of power days after Deputy President William Ruto's allies and supporters raised concern over a transition committee named by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during a meeting with international delegates on Thursday, July 14, the CS - who is also a member of the committee - assured the ambassadors that Uhuru was determined to hand over power peacefully to the President-elect after the August 9 polls.

Further, Matiang'i stated that plans were in place to ensure peaceful elections and smooth transition of power.

"The main agenda for the meeting today was to exchange notes with our development partners on the government plans to ensure continuity and stability of our economy.

"Our democracy has come of age and the people of Kenya want a peaceful election, they desire a peaceful transition of power and continuity," Matiang'i stated.

The CS made the statements weeks after Ruto's team expressed concern over alleged interference in the elections by government operatives while meeting a section of Ambassadors at his Karen office.

Ruto allies have also in the past raised concern over the transition committee which is responsible for organising the swearing-in of the president-elect declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

As per the law, the committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Cabinet - a position that has been held by the Head of Public Service, Joseph Kinyua.

The transition committee also hosts top officials from the Cabinet and security organs such as the National Police Service (NPS), Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

Additionally, the CS expressed that they discussed the skyrocketing cost of living even as he maintained that the government was working around the clock to lower the cost of basic goods.

"We are facing development challenges which have nothing to us. Some have to do with things that are happening in Europe which are causing pressure on the economy across the world.

"We have shared ideas on how we can alleviate these challenges and the suffering of our people so that our country can move forward," Matiang'i expressed.
