Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) mapped out Nairobi estates that will undergo intensive garbage collection exercises starting from Saturday, July 30.

Owning their failure to keep the city clean, NMS admitted that it is tasked with waste collection, transportation and disposal services within all Nairobi Wards.

Explaining why the city was left to stink, it detailed that they lacked enough manpower and trucks to properly execute their waste management duty.

"While it is the government’s mandate to ensure that its citizens stay in a clean and safe environment, maintaining the cleanliness and beautification of our city is a shared responsibility. Let’s join hands to achieve a sustainable green city," NMS explained.

The clean-up targets all CBD streets, including Wabera, Muindi Mbingu, Mama Ngina, Taifa Road, Harambee Avenue, Parliament Road and Mfangano Road.

"To successfully manage all the waste generated within Nairobi City County, NMS requires about 150 trucks doing at least two trips per day.

"These trucks will require a lot of manpower and resources for maintenance. Consequently, NMS maintains a small number of its own fleet outsourcing about 70 per cent of the work to garbage management firms," the Badi-led administration stated.

A section of Kenyans had shared photos of littered Nairobi estates, lamenting that the city was reverting to its old state.

Some raised concerns over the stinking air of decomposing garbage mixed with underground sewage and uncollected waste.

Others complained that they were forced to play a game of hop, step and jump to reach their homes as garbage filled the walkways.

Pipeline estate in Eastlands, for instance, was exposed to inaccessible roads filled with waste.

"It is a state we have been forced to live in. The situation is made worse by the locals, who have now made it a dumping site," one resident complained.

Most estates depend on the services of local youth initiatives, with garbage collected from residential houses at a fee.
