A parliamentary candidate's wife in Homa Bay county was robbed at gun point on Saturday night in company of the politician's supporters.

The incident saw Omburo Odaje, an aspiring MP of Rangwe constituency lose Ksh1 million to four thugs.

It was during the meeting between the politician's wife and his supporters when the incident took place. At a gun point, the thugs asked his wife to handover over the bag which had cash or risk being killed.

Odaje who arrived at his home hours later to meet his supporters reported the incident to Rangwe Police Station. No one was injured during the robbery.

“The lady’s phone that was stolen has been switched off. There were many people in that compound, hence we are still gathering information to enable us get crucial leads to help us apprehend those who committed the crime,” stated Homa Bay County CIO Abed Kavoo as reported by Standard.

Odaje is battling it out with the incumbent Lillian Gogo of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Achuodho Kachuodho of Democratic Alliance Party Kenya (DAP-K) and former area MP George Oner an independent candidate.

He joins a growing list of politicians who have faced the wrath of robbers and attackers in the run up to August 9 general election.

In June, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali claimed his life was in danger after unknown men raided his Nyali office on Sunday night, June 26.

In a press briefing, Ali claimed that the raid was carried out by state agents who fired gunshots in the air.

He claimed that his rivals were using police as a ploy to curtail his political bid. He questioned how goons could break into his office, directly opposite the office of the Deputy County Commissioner.

A month later, however, the same MP was summoned by police following a shooting incident which involved governor Ali Hassan Joho's cousin, Said Abdalla, also an aspiring MP in Nyali.

According to police, a car suspected to belong to the MP was captured by CCTV camera near the scene of crime. It had the number plate 'Nyali 1' which is associated with the lawmaker.

Police reports indicate the gun attack was in relation to campaign posters ahead of the August 9 polls.

“The posters are exhibits. We are also searching for the vehicle with the initials Nyali 1 which was captured by the CCTV and was being used by the gunmen. We are looking for the suspect who was captured in the shooting,” added Mumasaba.
