Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali, alias Moha Jicho Pevu has been summoned by police following a shooting incident involving Governor Ali Hassan Joho's cousin, Said Abdalla.

According to police, a car suspected to belong to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) allied MP was captured by CCTV camera near the scene of crime. It had the number plate 'Nyali 1' which is associated with the lawmaker.

The incident occurred on Sunday midnight, July 17 at Mambo roundabout in Nyali.

“Sunday midnight we received a report that Mr Abdalla had been attacked by unknown people around the Mambo roundabout. Police officers rushed to the scene to probe the incident,” Daniel Mumasaba, the Nyali police boss said.

Efforts to get a comment from the legislator proved futile as our phone calls went unanswered.

Police reports indicate the gun attack was in relation to campaign posters ahead of the August 9 polls.

“The posters are exhibits. We are also searching for the vehicle with the initials Nyali 1 which was captured by the CCTV and was being used by the gunmen. We are looking for the suspect who was captured in the shooting,” added Mumasaba.

The outspoken Member of Parliament who joined parliament in 2017 as an independent candidate has hit headlines in the recent past, when he accused the state of hiring hit men to harm him.

This was after number of unknown armed gunmen raided the MP's office on June 26.

"You are a very rich person we know that but we are poor and rich at heart. We shall fight you with our richness in our hearts until the last man standing. Continue using the police protection but the people of this county will assure that we bring a revolution so that we can save Mombasa county," he told the media then.

Mombasa Director of Criminal Investigations Barasa Walumoli, however, refuted the claims and affirmed that the incident was a pure case of burglary.

He added that the police officers guarding Ali's office repulsed the attackers when they opened fire, forcing them to scamper for their safety.

"This is a pure case of burglary it did not involve police officers in any way. In fact, the detectives guarding the office opened fire at the goons but they escaped. Nothing major was stolen, just a TV that was in the front office was taken. We are not sure of the number of the goons who raided the premises," Walumoli noted.

Ali, a former investigative journalist who is defending his seat on a UDA ticket in the forthcoming polls, will battle it out with ODM's Said “Saido” Abdalla in the August polls.
