Kenya's longest-serving Member of the National Assembly, Jimmy Angwenyi was trounced by United Democratic Alliance candidate Japheth Nyakundi.
Angwenyi was defeated by Nyakundi who garnered 11,834 votes while the former managed 8,260 in the Kitutu Chache North parliamentary contest.
The incumbent lawmaker had served five terms from 1997- 2007 when he was first elected as a Member of Parliament. In 2007 he lost the election and he was reelected in 2013 on a Jubilee Party ticket.
During the 2007 elections, Angwenyi was confronted by his opponent's supporters and a scuffle ensued where one person was shot dead.
The family of the man who was shot dead in Kitutu-Chache during the 2007 General Election filed to have Angwenyi charged with murder.
The widow of the man filed a petition in the High Court in Kisii seeking to have the case heard afresh.
In papers filed in court, the widow claimed that the case at the magistrate's court against Angwenyi's bodyguard, a police officer, was likely to obstruct and delay justice.
Robert Ogoti Obwori’s widow Lydia Kemunto, through the family advocate Herbert Nyamurongi, filed a petition at the Kisii High Court seeking to charge the former MP with murder.
Obwori died in a shoot-out outside Marani polling station after a group led by Angwenyi left the venue. His then bodyguard faced a manslaughter charge at the Kisii Magistrate’s Court.
But the widow told the court that witnesses at the tallying station saw the former MP shoot but only his aide was charged.
In the petition, the widow stated that the case against the bodyguard denied the family proper criminal justice process.
She wanted the High Court to order a judicial review to quash the charge sheet against the police officer.
