The results of the 2022 General Election have caught many seasoned politicians by surprise, with a number of newcomers defeating their seasoned competitors.

In some cases, a number of politicians who started their political careers as Members of County Assemblies have stamped their authorities in the leadership arena by clinching parliamentary, senatorial and gubernatorial seats.

Kenyans.co.ke takes a look at MCAs who booked their slots in Parliament in the just concluded polls.

Outgoing Sirikwa ward MCA, Alfred Mutai, trounced his opponents after garnering 25,365 votes to become the new Kuresoi North Member of Parliament. He defeated former National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Moses Cheboi, who got 20,395 votes.

During his victory speech, Mutai, who vied on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket, noted that he was a charcoal-burner before venturing into elective politics.

"Once upon a time, I used to burn charcoal in the forest. However, now we will lead this nation pushing from where others left. As we know, the current economic situation is not good so we want to save our economy," Mutai stated.

On the other hand, outgoing Kiima Kimwe MCA, Caleb Mule, who had served for one-term, defeated UDA's Victor Munyaka in the Machakos Parliamentary seat race.

Mule of Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC) party got 47,596 votes against Munyaka's 20,000 votes. Paul Museku of Wiper party came third with 2,533 votes.

Elijah Njoroge, the outgoing Biashara Ward MCA, took over as Gatundu North MP. Njoroge, who vied as an independent candidate, defeated his competitors from established political parties.

He garnered 15,224 votes against Jubilee's Anne Wanjiku Kibe who got 12,232 votes. UDA's Francis Kigo Njenga came third with 11,716 votes.

The former MCA is touted as a flamboyant politician according to many due to his luxurious lifestyle. Njoroge - who served as the Kiambu county Majority Chief Whip - tendered his resignation from the position in November 2018 citing unresolved issues between the County Assembly and the County Executive.

Eric Mwangi of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was also declared the winner of Mathira parliamentary seat after garnering 49,377 votes.

The outgoing Konyu ward MCA defeated Gikandi Stanley Waruru (Narc Kenya) who came second with 9,056 votes and Muriuki Daniel Kiige (Independent Candidate) who got 8,148 votes, while Wambura Marana (Jubilee) got 4,344 votes.
