On Thursday, August 11, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) constituency returning officers began announcing the results of the parliamentary election.
Kenyans elected their Members of Parliaments across the 290 constituencies, with candidates consisting on political party tickets and some as independents.
Kenyans.co.ke looks at some of the candidates who were elected MPs in the August 9, General Elections.
Ronald Karauri was declared the MP-elect of Kasarani constituency, Nairobi County. Karauri garnered 32,406 votes, with Jubilee candidate Mercy Gakuya coming in second with 20,000 votes.
He initially intended to run under a Jubilee ticket but was floored by Gakuya in the party primaries. Both he and his wife, renowned pilot Ruth Karauri, thanked the residents for voting him in.
"The people of Kasarani believed in me and together we have made history! Next is to turn our dreams into reality. Truly honoured to serve the good people of Kasarani. To the doubters and the haters, you better get used to it, I will keep surprising you," he stated.
"Thank you to the people of Kasarani for trusting him. I can assure you he will deliver on his promises!" Ruth stated.
Kisumu Town East lawmaker Shakeel Shabir retained his seat on an independent ticket. Shabir mustered 35,704 against ODM's Nicholas Oricho who summed 28,491 votes.
The third-time MP defied ODM's dominance in Kisumu County. He previously won the seat consecutively in 2007 and 2013 but went independent after losing in the nominations.
Kitilai Ntutu, took advantage of the supremacy battle between ODM and UDA in Narok County, to emerge top in the Narok South parliamentary race. He was declared the winner with 17,238 votes.
In Imenti North, incumbent Rahim Dawood successfully defended his seat after bagging 26, 218 votes, while his Nambale counterpart Geoffrey Mulanya shared the same fate with 19,018 votes.
Fatuma Mohamed won the Migori County Woman Representative having garnered 154,538 votes beating ODM’s Ghati Denittah who got 117,591 votes.
In the 2017 General Election, 13 independent candidates were elected as Members of the National Assembly.

Elijah Njoroge, Gatundu North constituency.
