UDA's Sakaja Beats Igathe in the Nairobi Governor Race

Outgoing  Senator Johnson Sakaja was on Sunday, August 14, declared the governor-elect for Nairobi City County.

Sakaja, who was running on a UDA ticket, outclassed Jubilee candidate Polycarp Igathe garnering  699,392 votes against his 576,516 votes.

He was declared the winner by the County Returning Officer Albert Gogo at the county tallying centre, Kasarani.  

"Therefore as county returning officer, I declare Johnson Arthur Sakaja as duly elected as the governor for Nairobi City County," Gogo announced.

Gogo noted that forms from six polling stations were missing. However, the total votes in the station,3,986 votes, would not make any difference in the final tally.

While issuing the certificate, the IEBC official read out Sakaja's passport number to confirm his win. However, the newly elected governor was not present to collect his certificate but showed later forcing the CRO to re-announce the results.

Sakaja, who fought numerous wars before being cleared to vie for the City's top job, won the contest alongside his running mate and banker James Muchiri.

He thanked the people of Nairobi for electing him. He further celebrated his main opponent for the peaceful peaceful campaigns devoid of enmity.

"I want to thank the people of Nairobi for believing me and giving me this mandate and this task of serving them as governor. I want to tell them that you are in safe hands with Njoroge Muchiri as my deputy governor and myself as county boss,"

"I want to thank my main opponent Polycarp Igathe for his gallant efforts, and that he held true to what we believe in - civilized politics," Sakaja reiterated.

According to IEBC, valid votes in favour of other candidates were as follows: Harman Grewal (10,521 votes), Agnes Kagure (10,086), Cleophas Mutua Kiio (6,485) and Dennis Kodhe (5,557).

Nancy Mwadime got 5,531, Kenneth Nyamwamu polled 7,377 while Esther Thairu garnered  5,944.

Following the declaration by the IEBC, Azimio gubernatorial candidate Polycarp Igathe conceded defeat.

"I accept the decision of the people of Nairobi and thank all our supporters. The Governor of Nairobi is His Excellency Johnson Sakaja. Congratulations!" Igathe stated.
