2 IEBC Officials Injured, Others Missing - Chebukati

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairperson Wafula Chebukati says that two commissioners and the CEO, Marjan Hussein, were injured in the Monday, August 15 scuffle at the Bomas of Kenya. 

He added that two other staff are missing and others were arrested arbitrarily. 

Chebukati stated that members of his staff faced a lot of intimidation during the electoral process but they remained calm during the process.

Wafula made the statements moments before declaring Deputy President William Ruto as the President-Elect.

"We have walked the journey of ensuring that Kenyans get a free fair and credible election. It has not been an easy journey, right now 2 of my commissioners and the CEO are injured," he stated.

Chebukati had earlier been accompanied by Commissioner Prof Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu before the fracas broke out.

Chebukati had to be protected by the police as some of the politicians made was to the dias prior to the much-anticipated announcement.

Additionally, he maintained that the electoral process was democratic insisting that he ensured that the will of the people was respected during the elections.

"This will be my last election to preside and those who will come later will find an independent commission. The people of Kenya exercised their democratic right and this is the will of the people.

"I took an oath of office to serve this country and I have my done my duty in accordance with the constitution and the laws of the land," Chebukati stated. 

The fracas at Bomas happened as four other commissioners issued a statement distancing themselves from the election results.

Led by IEBC Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, the team stated that they were there was opaqueness during some parts of the electoral process.
