Kenya Railways on Tuesday, August 16, announced that the evening locomotive plying Ruiru, Embakasi village, Limuru, Syokimau, Lukenya in Kitengela will not be operational.

The evening trains depart the Nairobi Central Station at 4:00 pm to different routes within the city and other satellite towns.

According to the notice, the train plying the six routes will resume on Wednesday, August 17.

Kenya Railways, however, indicated that the disruption would not affect the train from Nairobi Railway Central Station and Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Terminus.

"However, the Link train that operates between Nairobi Railway Central Station and Nairobi SGR Terminus shall operate as usual," Kenya Railways advised.

The Nairobi Commuter Rail operates three main train locomotives in the city and nearby destinations.

These train services include Commuter Trains, Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs), and Link Trains to the Nairobi SGR Terminus.

The trains arrive and depart the stations at different times. They also charge commuters depending on the routes and distance covered.

Nairobi Commuter Rail Service is part of the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Master Plan committed to providing city dwellers with highly accessible and reliable rail transport.

Phase 1 of the project involved providing commuter rail services between the Nairobi Railway Station and Embakasi village, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Kikuyu, Ruiru, and Syokimau.

Phase 2 was expected to extend the commuter services to Limuru, Lukenya, and Thika, while phase 3 includes routes such as Kangemi, Kiambu, Kiserian, Ngong, Ongata Rongai, and Ruai.

The ongoing upgrade and development of new stations at Donholm, Buru Buru, Umoja, Pipeline, and Githurai are all part of a larger plan to decongest the city by improving public transportation.
