Three people died while two others escaped with serious injuries after a lorry ferrying sugar overturned along the Kisumu-Kakamega road.

The accident happened on Tuesday, August 30 at the Coptic roundabout after the driver of the lorry lost control and rammed into a private vehicle.

According to reports, the driver of the ill-fated truck struggled to keep the vehicle on the road before the the crash.

The lorry was transporting sugar of unknown value from Kakamega to Kisumu when it veered off the road ploughing through a boda boda stage and landed in a ditch.

The impact of the accident was massive to the extent that the cabin of the lorry was ripped off  and thrown about 10 meters away.

Police confirmed that three people lost their lives in the Tuesday afternoon accident. The deceased were one woman and two men who are yet to be identified.

Police were deployed around the scene to guard the truck and keep off the public from looting the sugar.

Further, Regional traffic commander Mwangi Ng'ang'a said two other people sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Area residents blamed the accident on the design of the road saying it wasn't constructed correctly. They claimed the road is too steep and has witnessed several accidents in the recent past.

They called on the government to do away with the roundabout to avert future fatal incidents.

"A lot of lives have been lost along this road because of the steep and the high number of roundabouts on this road," Bonface Egenyi said.

This is not an isolated accident on the road. Last year an accident happened at the same spot involving a  PSV plying the Kisumu-Kakamega route leaving casualties.

A section of the road was declared a black spot five years ago, as one descends downhill from Kiboswa along the Kisumu-Kakamega highway.

Other notable black spots are Kisian along Kisumu-Busia Highway and the dual carriage at Nyamasaria, and have claimed lives in the past.
