Rishi Sunak, son of a Kenyan man, has lost his bid to succeed Boris Johnson as the next UK Prime Minister after losing to Liz Truss on Monday, September 5.

Sunak, who is the former UK Finance Minister, lost after garnering 43 per cent against Truss, who received 57 per cent of the Conservative members' vote.

170,000 Conservative members participated in the process, which saw Truss become the UK's third female prime minister, following in the footsteps of Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher.

Following his defeat, Sunak pledged his support to Truss, who will assume power on Tuesday, September 6.

"Thank you to everyone who voted for me in this campaign. I’ve said throughout that the Conservatives are one family.

"It’s right we now unite behind the new PM, Liz Truss, as she steers the country through difficult times," Sunak stated.

However, he did not disclose his next political move. Before taking a stab at the UK Prime Minister's post, Sunak had stepped down from his powerful Finance Minister's post.

The ex-minister received much support from Britons, pushing him to express interest in becoming the Conservative Party leader.

"Someone has to grip this moment and make the right decisions. That’s why I’m standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister," Sunak had rallied the Conservatives.

He was previously appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, a position he held from February 13, 2020, to July 5, 2022. He also acted as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from July 24 2019, to February 2020.

Sunak was elected Conservative MP for Richmond (Yorks) in May 2015 and served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy from June 2017 until his ministerial appointment.

Besides Sunak, UK Attorney General Suella Braverman, whose father is a Kenyan, had also expressed interest in succeeding Boris.

Despite serving under Boris, she distanced himself from his administration's shortcomings while promising to change the scope of UK leadership.

"If there is a leadership contest, I will put my name. I love this country, my parents came here with absolutely nothing, and it is the Britons that gave them hope," she stated.
