Election observers have joined the clamour to have President Uhuru Kenyatta retire and desist from joining the opposition.
PIMAC International Election Observer, Pius Masai, urged Uhuru to drop his position as the chairman of Azimio La Umoja council to help preserve his 10-year legacy.
Masai, on Saturday, September 10, opined that the president is a national figure and ought to remain neutral and offer advice to leaders from any party seeking his wisdom and direction without bias.
“President Kenyatta has done very well for the country in the past 10 years and to preserve his respect he must leave the leadership of the Azimio to other leaders and remain as an advisor,” he commented.
He added that Uhuru's legacy has put Kenya on the map as an example of democratic growth in the East African region.
Additionally, Uhuru was urged to act as the middle man between the incoming government led by William Ruto and former prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“Uhuru should instead act as a mediator between the incoming government and the opposition party led by ODM Leader Raila Odinga,” Masai added.
Notably, he advised Raila Odinga to recognise the new government and serve Kenyans in other capacities. Also, Kenyans were urged to move past the election period and move on.
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Mwangi Kiunjuri who shared the same sentiments insisted that Uhuru ought to retire peacefully.
"Uhuru has been respected by Kenyans for ten years, he should go home peacefully. I know he feels some shame but time heals and we will forget. You just can't pretend to be an activist," Kiunjuri stated.
Speaking after he was sworn in as Laikipia East MP at Parliament on Thursday, September 8 he added that Uhuru is not an ordinary Kenyan and should refrain from taking political sides after his retirement.
On Monday, September 5, the President hinted at being part of the opposition alongside Raila Odinga after he leaves office.
"I will hand over power smiling because it's my Constitutional duty but my leader is Baba, Raila Odinga. Do not yourselves to be bought or pocketed," Uhuru declared.
