Amason Kingi rose from little-known lawyer to Senate Speaker, following his election, on Thursday, September 8, days after completing his second term as Kilifi governor.
Following the ascension to power, his father, Kingi Maruwa on Monday, September 13 revealed how he struggled to feed and school his son.
“I stayed with him through problems, from food, Sometimes am chased by shiftas, the fees is taken away, I did not mind, every time I saw the members of the terror group, I would hide in the bush, and when they disappeared, I would resurface and continue looking for school fees,” Maruwa stated
Mzee Marua, a resident of Kamale village in Kilifi county, narrated how it was an uphill task raising a family with the attacks of the the defunct 'mashifta' terror group.
The 82 year old man further stated that he has more than 40 children despite the difficult challenges he has encountered.
“The first wife, the mother of the Speaker, has 13 children, the second one has 13, the third one has 6, the fourth has 4, and the fifth has 5. If you calculate, you will know the number of kids I have," Mzee Marua explained.
Mzee Maruwa now hopes that his son will one day be the President of Kenya. He attributes Kingi’s success to being a hard worker and full of wisdom from his childhood.
“It is my prayer to see my son become President of Kenya,” Mzee Kingi Mwaruwa
Additionally, Kingi’s siblings said they were very happy to see their brother being sworn in as the Senate speaker. They pray that he serves the people of Kenya diligently and that he should use his position to address unemployment issues in his backyard.
His father expressed gratitude to the people who entrusted him with the job and prayed that he serves people in all the right ways.
The Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) party leader is expected to lead the senate for the next five years after he was elected with a majority of 46 senators out of 67.
The new senate speaker served as the governor of Kilifi county for two terms from 2013 until 2022.
Kingi previously explained that every time he drives through corners, bushes and the trains of the village, he gets emotional because initially, there were no schools and roads.
In the run up to the August 9 elections, he dumped Azimio leader Raila Odinga and teamed with William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza.
Kingi was promised the Senate speaker's position, a pledge that Ruto honoured, by rallying all Kenya Kwanza and affiliated senators behind Kingi.
