Uhuru Walks Into a Warm Embrace at Ruto's Inauguration

President Uhuru Kenyatta was greeted with cheers as he arrived at the inauguration of his successor William Ruto.

The outgoing president arrived minutes after Ruto made his way to the Kasarani Stadium on Tuesday, September 13. 

Just as in other national events, Uhuru arrived at the stadium in the Toyota Land Cruiser ceremonial car as he waved to the thousands of Kenyans attending Ruto's swearing-in.

His wife, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta was also cheered on upon her entrance at Kasarani. 

Upon arrival, Uhuru preceded to inspect the guard of honour for the last time as president. He was accompanied by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Robert Kibochi.

Afterwards, the outgoing president was welcomed by Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja as he proceeded to greet the visiting heads of state.

Uhuru's handshake with his successor also made him receive a wild round of applause from the over 70,000 people attending the event.

Ruto is set to take of office before 2 pm and will receive instruments of power from his predecessor.

The president had reiterated that he would hand over power peacefully as dictated by the Constitution when he met Ruto at State House on Monday, September 12.

"My family and I join all Kenyans in wishing the very best to our next President Dr. William Samoei Ruto and extending to him our warmest congratulations for receiving the mandate of Kenyans to lead us as our 5th president," said Uhuru in his address to the nation," Uhuru stated.

The outgoing president made the statements minutes after hosting Ruto as State House.

As is tradition, Uhuru took Ruto around the official president's residence while in the company of First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and Mama Rachel Ruto.
