Wafula Chebukati's children paid tribute to their father on social media hours after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries and Commission (IEBC) chairperson received accolades from President William Ruto.
In separate statements on Tuesday, September 13, Chebukati's children Rachel and Emmanuel Chebukati - acknowledged that their father overcame many challenges in the August 9 polls.
The recognition from Ruto, they added, was attributed to their father's determination to conduct free, fair and successful elections.
On his part, Emmanuel noted that his father faced tribulations since taking up the position in 2016.
The larger Chebukati family had, however, endeared to support the electoral boss during his reign at IEBC.
Emmanuel described his father as a champion and hero just like Ruto perceived him.
"It was always my pleasure to assist when called upon, chairman. Let me also extend the gratitude to those in my circle who offered similar assistance and support to the family starting from New Year's Eve in 2016 when you were nominated to the position of Chairman of the IEBC," he stated.
On the other end, Rachel expressed confidence in her father detailing how prayers helped them to stick together as a family for the last five years.
"The last few weeks have been a roller-coaster but God saw us through. Proud of you Dad," she stated.
The special tribute by the two came after the electoral body boss opened up on his struggles during the electioneering period even as he thanked part of their IEBC and family for helping him get through alleged intimidation.
On behalf of IEBC and myself, I wish to thank President William Ruto for recognising IEBC for having raised the bar of integrity and the standard of public service in Kenya.
"I feel proud to have made my contribution towards strengthening democracy in Kenya. God bless," he stated.
In his inauguration speech, Ruto praised Chebukati for standing steadfast despite attempts to influence the outcome of the August 9 polls in favour of their opponents.
