Members of County Assemblies countrywide began electing speakers on Tuesday, September, 20.
The exercise was a bag of mixed fortunes, with former Members of Parliament, women and some incumbents, being declared winners.
Stakes were so high in some county assemblies, with cases of violence, intense lobbying and bribery being reported.
The position of Speaker comes with lucrative perks, and massive powers, making it attractive to candidates and competitive.
In the run up to the elections, Governors worked hard, including taking the Members of County Assemblies for retreats in a bid to whip them.
On Tuesday, Kisumu County elected Elisha Jack Oraro, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party favourite, as the third Speaker of Kisumu County Assembly.
Oraro garnered 24 votes in the first round with his closest competitor managing to get 23 votes.
Clerk to the Assembly Owen Ojuok who oversaw the election called for a second round of after the two candidates failed to garner two thirds of the votes cast.
The election came despite threats by a section of MCA to boycott. The MCAs wanted to boycott after four nominated MCAs were sworn in despite a court order filed by ODM.
In Trans-Nzoia County, Former finance secretary, Andrew Wanyonyi was elected as the new County Assembly Speaker defeating former Cherangany Member of Parliament Wesley Korir.
The County Assembly Clerk Moses Lubao confirmed that Wanyonyi won the seat after garnering 20 votes against Korir's 13 through a simple majority vote. The race had attracted 7 contestants.
In Siaya County, George Okode retained his seat after garnering 38 votes against his competitor Evans Orwenjo who got only 2 votes. Okode was first elected as the speaker of Siaya County in 2013, with his victory.
Christopher Nakulee was elected as the third Speaker of Turkana County unopposed. Nakulee was the former MP for Turkana North.
He was declared speaker by Turkana County Assembly Clerk Linus Lokawa after five other nominees were disqualified. Some of the nominees disqualified from the list are still holding public offices.
Nakuleu, who lost his parliamentary seat to Paul Nabuin of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), received a major boast after his party United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominated him for the position.
On the other hand, Teddy Mwambire, immediate former Ganze Mp was elected as the speaker of the County Assembly of Kilifi.
Mwambire garnered 37 out of 51 votes of the Members of County Assembly.
