On Wednesday, October 5, a suspect was elated after a Mombasa Principal Magistrate gifted him a new set of clothes.

The suspect, Richard Christopher Odhiambo, had appeared in the Mombasa Court, before Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet, in tattered clothes.

He then told the magistrate that he was yet to be given prison uniform at Shimo la Tewa as his case inches close to the sentencing stage.

Touched, Adet then bought new clothes for the suspect who is facing a case where he was accused of defilement.

During the Wednesday proceedings, Odhiambo was in court wearing a tattered shirt and a pair of shorts.

In May, the same magistrate temporarily halted court proceedings to fund raise for a couple charged with stealing a bale of wheat flour.

He donated Ksh1,000 during the drive prompting other members present in the courtroom to contribute for the couple.

The court staff and others in attendance during the session heeded the call and made their contributions.

The couple had been charged with stealing contrary to section 268 (1) as read with section 275 of the penal code.

The court heard that the two stole one bale of wheat flour from a local shop based in Shimanzi area in the Mvita sub-county valued at Ksh1980.

The couple had told the court that they were pushed to steal in effort to fend for their children.

The wife confessed that her husband called her asking her to carry the bale after a long day of work. She added that they did that to feed their children.

"On humanitarian grounds, especially for the first accused person, I have considered the circumstances under which the offense was committed and I sympathize with her situation, with three kids under her care and no source of income, and am of the view that let buy her a bale of wheat flour and some meat for today," the judge stated at the time.
