A prison inmate at Nakuru Women's Prison, Jane Chebet, was elated after finally interacting with her family members and children for the first time since 2013.

The woman, who had rarely received visitors since she was sentenced, lamented that she had even seen her children who now have children.

"Since 2013, I had not seen my kids and grand children since they rarely visited me.

"But through the program, I am lucky to be reconnected with my kin,” she stated.

The virtual program introduced by a non-profit organization involves visiting the inmates' families and then virtually connecting with them in prison.

Through the video links, inmates can keep up with the lives of their families outside the prison gates

Some of the inmates lamented that they faced stigma for being in prison.

"I was very happy seeing my kids through the virtual program. I lack words to express my joy to finally see my children,” one inmate added.

"From 2018, I was not able to see my kids, but through the program,” another inmate stated.

Notably, through the virtual program, the inmates feel wanted by society, and the children feel a deep sense of belonging.

The interaction has helped reduce the mental anguish of the inmates who longed to speak to their families. According to the prison warden, the program has improved the bond between the inmates and their families.

"Through the program, inmates can know the well-being of their families and vice versa. The interactions have reduced the mental toll of not seeing family members,” remarked the warden.

Additionally, the program helps inmates who are almost done with their sentences. They can slowly be absorbed into society as reformed individuals.

Also, the non-profit organization provided training programs to equip the inmates with hands-on skills.
