Police on Sunday, October 16, arrested Collins Okundi, a man suspected of killing Ida Odinga's bodyguard on Friday.

The suspect is said to have been nabbed in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County where a firearm, one magazine and seven rounds of ammunition were also recovered.

The man has been on the run after he reportedly shot corporal Barrack Onyango twice in the head and leg, killing him on the spot before disarming him and taking off.

Other media reports indicated that Okundi surrendered to the police before he was taken in by law enforcement officers.

The incident happened after Ida Odinga’s bodyguard attempted to resolve a conflict between his friends at Victoria Gardens, located off the Kisumu- Kakamega highway.

In the ensuing confrontation, the woman and another unidentified person sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for admission and assessment.

After his escape, Kisumu County commander, Alphonse Kimathi called on anybody with Okundi's whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.

Okundi who is a manager at a popular entertainment spot in Kisumu, had been described by police as an armed and dangerous person and had the potential of continuing with the crime.

Ida Odinga’s bodyguard is said to have been crucial during Odinga’s presidential campaign especially in providing security as she traversed the country, rooting for his husband's bid.

Despite various reports pointing to a love triangle, police are still doing the investigation to establish what happened before the shooting.

However, Ida, while at a funeral service in Bondo, Siaya County, condoled with the family of the late Barack, stating that his death was unfortunate.

"I want to send my condolences to the family of Barack, who hails from Bondo. It is unfortunate that I lost my personal bodyguard who was shot dead,” Ida stated.

The suspect who is in police custody is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, October, 17.
