Mama Ida Odinga's bodyguard was shot dead by assailants in Kisumu County on Friday morning, October 14.

Police opened investigations into the incident, with preliminary reports indicating that the officer was involved in an altercation with an unnamed man before a shootout ensued.

Nyanza regional police boss Karanja Muiruri, and Mama Ida's head of security, David Masaga, confirmed the bodyguard's demise.

Eyewitnesses claimed that he was shot at his Riat home in Kisumu West Sub-County, which is located near Odinga’s residence.

However, contradicting reports claimed that the bodyguard was partying at a club in Riat in Kisumu West Sub-County.

The Kisumu police boss indicated that he would reveal the identity of the officer once the family has been informed.

One woman and a man who were said to be in the company of the bodyguard incurred gunshot wounds and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police are yet to provide an update on the status of the duo.

The bodyguard's body was transferred to the Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue pending autopsy.

Detectives assigned to the case launched a manhunt for the suspect, who fled the crime scene.

Reports also indicated that the wife of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was safe.

Ida and her team are yet to issue a statement over the matter.
