Sources of Wealth for Ruto's Millionaire Cabinet Nominees

President  William Ruto cabinet nominees were put to task to declare their wealth before the Appointments Committee, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula.

However, what left Kenyans talking was that all the nominees who appeared before the committee are dollar millionaires who attributed their wealth to businesses they engage in, government salaries, real estate and farming.

Kenyans.co.ke looks at the sources of wealth that popped up during the first day of screening.

1. Musalia Mudavadi

Prime Cabinet Secretary nominee Musalia Mudavadi while appearing before the Committee on Appointments on Monday, October 17 revealed that he is worth Ksh4 billion.

Mudavadi claimed that his net worth is around the figure if his shares in various entities are added to his real estate.

"If I take my investments and shares in some companies and also the properties that I own, I would put my net worth at about Ksh4 billion," Mudavadi said.

Mudavadi was also put to task about his current and anticipated sources of income which he stated that his source of wealth would mainly come from rental income, dividends from shareholdings and capital that come from his farms.

Mudavadi on his wealth declaration form also revealed that he has interests in an aircraft with exclusive air services.

Additionally, he also stated that he has properties in Riverside from where he earns his rental income and other office spaces.

Mudavadi served in as a Member of Parliament, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and and in various ministerial positions. Mudavadi is therefore entitled to pension benefits, as stipulated by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission - SRC.

2. Aden  Duale

Aden Duale who was nominated by President William Ruto as Cabinet Secretary for Defence stated that he is worth Ksh851 million.

Duale who appeared before MPs for vetting stated that his main source of wealth is attributed to livestock.  Duale divulged that he keeps flocks of a camel.

“This is including the assets that I own which include the sheep, and camels. I had to go and value my 231 camels somewhere in Kitui County which brings the total to Sh851 million,” he stated.

Duale further revealed that his current source of income was rentals where he gets Ksh10 million annually.

Duale, a seasoned politician who won his first elections in 2007, also attributed his wealth to the salary he has drawn as a lawmaker for three consecutive terms. Duale also rose through the ranks to become an Assistant Minister and leader of Majority in the National Assembly.

3. Justin Muturi

The former National Assembly Speaker elicited mixed reactions among a section of Kenyans after he revealed that his net worth is estimated at Ksh700 million.

However, during an interactive session with his Twitter followers on November 18, 2021, Muturi pegged his net worth at Ksh300 million.

Muturi told the committed chaired by his successor, Moses Wetangula that he is a farmer who also offers legal consultancy services.

He further divulged that he also enjoys apension as a retired NA Speaker

He also revealed that he owns commercial property, which caused a jump in his net worth to Ksh 700 million.

4. Alfred Mutua

Dr Alfred Mutua, former governor of Machakos County told the committee that his financial net worth stood at Ksh420 million.

Mutua further stated that the Ksh420 million include his hotels, apartments and a few businesses and companies that he owns and acts as a shareholder.

However, when put on task to explain his luxurious hotel, Mutua stated that the hotel A&L was built on loan and hopes that he will fully own it in future.

The former government spokesperson's financial wealth also counted pension and salary as some of the sources of his salary.
