Njeri Rugene: Veteran Journalist Appointed to DP Rigathi Gachagua's Office

President William Ruto on Monday, October 17, appointed Njeri Rugene as the Head of Communication Services in the Office of the Deputy President.

Njeri is currently a Consultant editor and Columnist, at Daily Nation, a leader and founder of the Woman’s Newsroom Foundation (WON).

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Language Literature and Kiswahili and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi.

Njeri has over 25 years of experience as a journalist in reporting, writing and editing. She once served as a news manager while working for the Nation Media Group - NMG.

She has extensive experience in Parliamentary, Political and Gender Affairs reporting. 

As a journalist, she also covered landmark political events in Kenya including General Elections and Constitutional reviews.

In 2015 and 2017, Eugene had a rare opportunity to cover and participate in gender affairs, at the Commission on the Status of Women in New York. She has written extensively on gender and especially on GBV. 

Njeri will join Paul Muraya who has also been appointed as the Private Secretary to the Deputy President.

Prior to the 2022 General elections, the celebrated news editor was unveiled among 23 members of a committee dubbed the Technical Committee on Election Coverage Guidelines.

The committee, which was formed by the Media Council of Kenya, was tasked with shaping election coverage in August.

As the Head of Communications, Njeri will be tasked with creating, delivering and measuring the effectiveness of comprehensive strategic internal and external communications plans within the office of the Deputy President.

President William Ruto has already allocated Gachagua seven key functions and institutions with specific functions that he will perform among others, co-ordinate the planning and supervision of the implementation of development partners' funded programmes and projects.
