Youths in Homa Bay are set to benefit from the government's housing agenda two weeks after President William Ruto toured the county. .

A notice by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) carried in local dailies on Wednesday, October 19, thus welcomed prospective bidders to apply for a tender for the construction of affordable houses in the Nyanza region.

The proposed Homa Bay Affordable Housing project will comprise studio apartments and one and two-bedroom units per the head of state's plan.

Ruto had pledged to initiate the project aimed at constructing 2,000 housing units during the project's first phase.

He also noted that the project would encompass job creation in the form of manpower during the project's construction process.

The jobs targeted plumbers, masons, interior designers, truck drivers as well as suppliers, among other positions.

"I will return to kickstart the housing project here in Homa Bay. We have already planned to construct the first 2,000 units here in Homa Bay.

"This will aid in providing employment to the youth as well as a plan for low-cost housing to enable people to live a dignified life," Ruto announced.

Project Nitty Gritties

The National Housing Corporation (NHC), a state-owned corporation, invited tender bids for the phase 1 project advising interested applicants to obtain the tender document from their website free of charge.

NHC further directed the applicants to submit completed bids addressed to its managing director for evaluation.

The project is part of the Head of State's grand plan to deliver 200,000 low-cost houses annually for the next five years.

In his plan, a one-bedroom apartment is expected to cost roughly Ksh1 million in what Ruto fashioned as a rent-to-buy design, with owners paying a monthly mortgage of as low as Ksh5,000.
