A resident from Meru County filed a petition to compel the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to impeach area governor, Kawira Mwangaza.

Salesio Mutuma, a former senatorial candidate, moved to court on Thursday, October 27, seeking to obtain orders to push the MCAs to oust Mwangaza on the grounds of gross misconduct.

Mutuma accused the county chief of nepotism, claiming that she appointed relatives and friends to county positions.

“Her official diver is a husband to her personal assistant, her cousin is the county government spokesperson, and her husband is the Meru Youth Service patron.

"These appointments are not only irregular but also illegal," the petition read in part.

In addition, he accused Mwangaza of deviating from the stipulated procedure when she appointed the chair of the Meru County revenue board.

Meru assembly clerk, Jacob Kirari, confirmed receiving the petition and assembling a legal team to study it and give a due response.

Article 181 (1) (a) and (c) provide for the removal of a county governor from office on the grounds of gross violation of the Constitution and abuse of office or gross misconduct.

Earlier the county chief revealed that she had received the MCAs' formal request seeking approval of ward funds.

However, she reiterated that she would stick to formal procedures in the county and was ready to battle it out with the ward representatives.

"I am ready to give MCAs Ksh100 million once I am given a go-ahead; be happy now. Meanwhile, bring it on mtajua hamujui. Kaende kaende tena bila brakes. Get used to it," Mwangaza wrote.

On October 25, the first-time governor denied being cautioned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission over irregular appointments to the county government.

Mwangaza claimed that she was yet to receive formal communication from EACC, contrary to multiple reports.
