An uproar ensued on Monday night, October 11, after a Toyota Prado overturned at a dangerous Ngong Road section between the Junction Mall and Lenana School.
The Prado flipped and landed on its roof and nearly rolled several times on the highway.
Despite the cause of the accident yet to be ascertained, a section of Kenyans quickly blamed the Kenya Urban Roads Authority for the poor road design.
It was alleged that a near similar accident occurred at the section a few days ago. However, no casualties were reported similar to the overturned Prado.
“We have on several occasions put (Kenya Urban Roads Authority) KURA roads on the spotlight over the maintenance and overhaul of this road but to no avail," a comment read.
“It was a collision. Second accident on this turn in two weeks. Let the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) note that this road from Dagoretti corner onwards is poorly designed - especially the U-turns," another tweep lamented, arguing that the section does not have lights nor speed bumps.
Several other Kenyans blamed the accident on reckless driving by overconfident drivers who take are oblivious to road designs and signs.
“As usual in such cases, let me continue blaming overspeeding drivers. They should stop this habit of racing like it's their last day on this earth,” wrote Bernard Koech.
“Prados are not racing cars as many perceive,” Moses Ojienda added.
A significant number of respondents touched on the poor lighting and flawed design on the road, terming it as a leading cause of frequent accidents along the road.
The accident happened just two days after a drunk driver killed six passengers along the Eastern Bypass. The motorist rammed into a TukTuk and sandwiched it with an incoming 14-seater matatu.
Kenyans called on the government to take action and reduce cases of accidents.
Data released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in September 2022 indicated that ver 3,000 deaths were recorded on Kenyan roads since the start of 2022.
The majority of the accidents were blamed on reckless human behaviour such as drunk driving, not wearing safety belts and overspeeding.
