Parents, especially in drought-stricken counties, can now breathe a sigh of relief after the Kenyan government has launched a feeding program in schools.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu launched the program on Wednesday, November 2, at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
Machogu said that the government had put in place measures to ensure that the food reaches schools in drought and famine-stricken areas.
This will be achieved through inter-ministerial and inter-governmental interventions.
Different ministries and government agencies will cooperate to ensure the food is ferried to intended schools and beneficiaries.
While appreciating donors and well-wishers, the CS urged them to continue helping the government by donating food to needy Kenyans.
Machogu was accompanied by outgoing PS Basic Education Julius Jwan and KICD CEO Prof. Charles Ong'ondo during the launch.
Currently, Kenya has 10 counties adversely affected by drought.
They include; Isiolo, Mandera, Samburu, Kajiado, Tharaka Nithi, Turkana, Wajir, Laikipia, Tana River and Marsabit. The counties have been earmarked for immediate intervention through various relief food programs.
Additionally, the following counties are experiencing alarm (not severe) drought; Embu, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Meru, Narok, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Kwale and Kilifi.
Baringo, West Pokot and Lamu have been classified by the government as having normal drought phases.
Schools in the aforementioned counties expect to receive relief food from the government starting Wednesday, November 2.
