President William Ruto's Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries are entitled to hefty parks including an official government car to facilitate their movements.
As per the guidelines by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), the members of Ruto's cabinet are entitled to cars that do not exceed an engine capacity of 3000cc.
Some of the common vehicles that have been issued to the CSs in recent years include Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and the Toyota Prado TX.
The Toyota TX has an engine capacity of 2755cc while some of the land cruiser Prado series have a capacity of going up to 2982cc.
Another commonly used vehicle is the Volkswagen Passat which has often been used by Treasury CS. This was mostly witnessed during the reading of the budget.
The Volkswagen model has a CC of 1968cc. However, the series has engine capacities that go beyond the 3000cc limit.
Nonetheless, other saloon cars such as the Mercedes Benz C200 which has an engine capacity of 1950cc.
The majority prefer Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) because of their ability to navigate different terrains, including off-road.
The 3000cc limitation of SRC is aimed at cutting the cost of fuel given the ever-increasing expenditure of the government.
Additionally, the CSs and PSs are entitled to car loans. Cabinet secretaries are entitled to a car loan of Ksh10 million while the principal secretaries are entitled to a loan of Ksh8 million.
"The car loan shall be administered and managed centrally by the National Treasury, within existing applicable regulations to govern the schemes, and subject to the availability of funds.
"The car loan shall be recoverable within the contract term of a State officer," SRC stated in its circular.
