The Nation Media Group (NMG) is set to lay off several employees as it seeks to enhance its digital production.

Sources at the media house told Kenyans.co.ke that the management notified the employees of its restructuring plan in a meeting held on Friday, November 4.

Group CEO Stephen Gitagama and Board Chairman Wilfred Kiboro attended the meeting.

NMG is also keen on adopting a bottom-up mentorship program that will see the younger tech-savvy journalists mentor the older ones and assist them in adapting to the changing digital media landscape.

However, the number of staff set to be sent home was yet to be disclosed by the time of publishing.

The announcement was made after the organisation made changes to various managerial positions on Friday, November 4.

Monica Ndungu was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) while Joe Ageyo was promoted to act as the Group Editorial Director.

Ageyo replaced Mutuma Mathiu who was appointed consulting editor. All changes made will be reviewed in April 2023.

NMG is among media houses expected to retrench their employees in 2022's fourth quarter.

In September 2022, the Standard Media Group announced mass firings citing the decrease in revenue.

"Disruption of our business in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the pandemic which continues to negatively impact the Group's revenues and the restructuring of the business to adopt a leaner, more efficient structure," read a memo by SG.

Reports indicated that journalists at Standard Media Group were yet to be paid salaries of up to three months

BBC also announced a mass layoff with over 382 journalists set to be released.
