The Orange Democratic Movement, ODM, has nominated Winnie Odinga to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

Winnie, Raila Odinga's daughter, and Mombasa businessman, Suleiman Shahbal, were listed among the six nominees in the list released by the party on Wednesday, November 9.

"ODM Selection Committee, presided by deputy party leader, Wycliffe Oparanya, met yesterday, Tuesday, November 8, and nominated the following to EALA.

"Suleiman Shahbal (Mombasa), Mohammed Diriye (Wajir) Winnie Odinga (Nairobi), Timothy Bosire (Nyamira), Beatrice Askul (Turkana) and Justus Kizito (Kakamega)," ODM announced.

Suleiman, a businessman, shelved his ambition to contest for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in favour of the current governor, Abdulswamada Nassir.

During the campaigns in the run-up to the August 9 election, Shabal worked closely with the Azimio la Umoja leadership in campaigning for Raila Odinga's presidential bid.

On the other hand, Winnie Odinga was instrumental in her father's campaigns, to the extent of clashing with some of his allies.

Reports about her imminent nomination sparked a debate from a section of Kenyans. However, she came out publicly to denounce the reports.

"I have not applied for EALA, nor has any official comms come from the party. Just a disgruntled incoming CS bothered by the girl," Winnie Odinga stated in October 2022.

The nominees will be presented to Parliament for vetting and approval before the joint Committee on the Election of the East Africa Legislative Assembly.

Major political parties in parliament will nominate their respective nominees for the nine available slots for Kenya in the Arusha-based Assembly.

Notably, nominating members to EALA was highly contentious due to a long list of politicians jostling for the available slots.

The list included relatives of political party leaders and politicians who lost in the August General Election.
