The African Union (AU) High Representative for Infrastructure and Development Raila Odinga broke down his undertakings during the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 9, Raila explained that he has attended several conferences during the COP touching on energy in Africa.
He lauded the efforts of global leaders to address climate change but insisted that urgent action needed to be taken other than the promissory notes made during the conference.
"I am participating in different forums discussing issues of energy transition in Africa. I think that there needs to be more commitment and bridge the gap between rhetoric and action.
"For instance, we have the Green Fund, unfortunately, the north has not been able to live up to their pledges in terms of funding for the project," Odinga stated.
While he lauded the 'Developing countries call for climate justice' theme for COP 27, he opined that the discussion of the damages of climate change scheduled to take place in 2024 would be a little too late.
Images seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed that the Azimio coalition party leader met with top dignitaries including Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu and Zimbabwe's Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Raila was accompanied by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang' and secretariat communications director Dennis Onyango.
The former Prime Minister left the country on Monday, November 7, to attend the 12-day climate change conference, in which President William Ruto was in attendance.
Ruto and Odinga did not meet during the convention despite him chairing several forums and addressing fellow world leaders on November 7.
The president reiterated Kenya's commitment to mitigate the impact of climate change which has caused the worst drought home in Kenya. He called on international leaders to work together to solve the menace.
Notably, the head of state flew back to the country and hosted South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa who is in the country for a two-day state visit.
