The Director of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Amin Mohamed recalled when the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) played a role in the rescue of hundreds of vulnerable children from abuse and exploitation.

Mohamed disclosed that NCA funded the construction and equipping of a child protection centre of excellence in Mombasa in 2020.

DCI boss noted that since the establishment of the facility, hundreds of children have been rescued from cases of human trafficking and exploitation.

In a meeting with the unit on Wednesday, November 9, Mohamed lauded the continued support and called for more cooperation between the two countries.

"The British High Commission through the National Crime Agency has been our valued partner for many years and their support in developing our human resource capacity cannot be overemphasised," DCI noted.

NCA officials, Simon Faulkner and Amanda Hickman sought ways to boost the collaboration between the two agencies to combat crime not only in Kenya but along the Horn of Africa.

Furthermore, the country's top detective highlighted the numerous sectors in the NCA that have supported Kenya to stop organised crimes.

The partnership, Mohamed noted was aimed at curbing money laundering, human trafficking, smuggling, crimes against children, and terrorism among others.

"The National Crime Agency has previously sponsored and facilitated capacity building programs aimed at improving the professional and investigative capacity of our officers," he added.

During the event, British High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriot launched the Anti-human Trafficking Child Protection Unit (AHTCPU).

Marriot was joined by the former Director of the DCI George Kinoti who noted that more officers had been directed to tackle child trafficking cases.

"The new unit will enable the National Police Service (NPS) to respond to suspected cases in remote coastal areas using the three UK-donated 4X4 vehicles and mobile laboratory of its kind in Kenya. The mobile laboratory will allow police to conduct victim interviews and examinations," she stated
