United Democratic Alliance (UDA) won round one fight in the fight for political parties' funds after a dispute tribunal halted the disbursement of the money.
The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) ordered the Registrar of Political Parties to respond to UDA's motion within five days.
Desma Nungo, the tribunal chairperson, on Friday, November 11, further directed the registrar to disclose the formula behind the allocation of the money that saw UDA win Ksh577 million and ODM Ksh308 million.
President William Ruto's UDA was thus offered relief as they had sought an injunction against the matter.
UDA first questioned the formula behind the disbursement of the money, arguing that the registrar failed to disclose how it arrived at the said amount.
It wanted clarification on the treatment of votes secured by the appellant visà-vis the total number of qualifying votes.
While factoring in all its arguments, Ruto's party demanded an additional Ksh115 million from the over Ksh1 billion funds.
The party's finance director, Joseph Mulili, argued that the party enjoyed the majority of politicians in the country and must be rewarded a fair allocation.
“No particulars of computation were provided to show how the said figure originated.
“The respondent, in arriving at the fund allocations, totally disregarded the appellant’s unopposed votes in the positions of Kericho County Women Representative and MCA Eldama Ravine Ward, Baringo County,” UDA lamented while demanding a higher windfall.
Besides UDA and ODM, Jubilee Party, DAP-K and Wiper Democratic Movement Party also benefitted from the funds.
In total, 48 political parties were set to receive a share of political parties' funds, with the Green Thinking Action Party of Kenya (GTAP) getting the least amount of Ksh582,000.
The case will be mentioned on November 17 and heard on November 19.
