TV power couple Lulu Hassan and husband Rashid Abdalla on Tuesday, November 15, donated loads of relief food to families affected by drought in Kwale County.
In an announcement made by the Governor's Press Service, Deputy Governor Josephat Chirema received the consignment of foodstuff from Lulu and a representative from the Rashid Abdalla Super Cup.
Chirema explained that the donations would be distributed to vulnerable families in Lunga Lunga and Kinango constituencies.Lulu Hassan, Kwale Deputy Governor Josphat Chirema, Loiza Kithi and a representative of the county at the office of the governor on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.Governor's Press Service - Kwale
"The two were able to donate 500kgs of sugar 2,000kgs of rice,77 bags of maize flour, 480 litres of cooking oil, 500 packets of tea leaves and 152 boxes of Indomie noodles," the statement read in part.
Speaking on behalf of Rashid, representative Loize Kithi noted that the couple was committed to reducing fatalities in their home county occasioned by the worst drought to hit the country in four decades.
"At the moment, our country is hit by drought and we can not depend on the government alone to ease the situation, we have to join hands as Kenyans to help those in need of food and water," Kithi stated.
Among the most vulnerable groups affected by the drought are school-going children who have been forced to skip school because of thirst and starvation.
DG Chimera, on the other hand, lauded the donation and encouraged other well-wishers to lend a helping hand to the county residents.
Kwale is among the counties listed in the arid and semi-arid land (ASAL) areas which have been most affected by drought.
On November 1, President William Ruto declared that his government had allocated an extra Ksh2 billion to help mitigate the effects of drought.
The government has embarked on a food distribution exercise across the country supervised by the cabinet secretaries. However, the president revealed medium and long-term resolutions to the crises.
Among the proposals is to increase the country's tree cover, it targets to plant two million trees across Kenya. The exercise will be carried out by the youth.A picture of emaciated cows due to ravaging drought in KenyaFilefatal
